The difference between an interchangeable earring you wear for a decade and one that loosens in six months is mechanical, not aesthetic. The metal looks the same in both cases, and the finish looks the same at arm's length; the difference sits below the surface, in the small mechanical decisions the studio makes at the point of closure. What separates them is what happens at the closure, and that difference is the point of this article.
We build two mechanisms across the Loretana interchangeable hoop line: the open-close hinged hoop and the seated stone setting. Both are engineered in 925 sterling silver, both are rhodium-plated at the friction surfaces, and both are tested by hand in our workshop in Kaunas before any piece goes to the Lithuanian assay office for hallmarking. This piece explains what each mechanism does, why we chose the two we chose, and what to look for at inspection.
Why the mechanism choice depends on the element weight
An interchangeable hoop has to hold a decorative element against gravity, against lateral force from hair and clothing, and against the wearer's own movement across a normal day. The forces the mechanism resists are small in absolute terms (a swap element weighs half a gram to two grams) but they act continuously and unpredictably. Any mechanism that holds only some of the time is not a mechanism that ships.
The two mechanisms we use are chosen for two different weight and geometry cases. Light, flat elements such as a halo or a small disc suit the open-close hoop, which handles them cleanly with the least visible hardware. Heavier or three-dimensional elements such as a faceted stone or a duo of stones suit the seated stone setting, which has more mechanical margin at higher element weights.
This is engineering rather than preference, and we do not offer a choice of mechanism on a single piece; each Loretana design carries the mechanism its element weight and geometry actually call for, chosen at the point where the piece is drawn.
The open-close hinged hoop, in mechanical detail
This is the mechanism on the Blue Halo (silver and gold-plated), the Blue Drop, and the Blue Duo. The hoop has a hinge cut into the silver at one point on its circumference, and a click closure at the diametrically opposite point. To swap, you press the closure open, slide the current element off the open end, slide the new element on, and click the hoop back closed.
Three things make this mechanism either reliable or unreliable, depending on how the studio finishes it.
The hinge pin. A hinge is two halves of metal pivoting on a small pin. The pin diameter, the tightness of the holes drilled to receive it, and the surface finish of the pin all determine how long the hinge stays tight. Our pin is steel, set into matched silver housings drilled to a tolerance of a tenth of a millimeter. The pin itself does not move under normal use; the silver housing pivots around it, and the small friction that accumulates during years of opening wears the silver very evenly around the pin's circumference.
Cheap hinges skip the pin. They use a soldered loop with no rigid axis, which works on day one and loosens predictably as the loop deforms. If the closure feels excellent when you first hold the piece and then noticeably worse after ten openings, the hinge is the loop-and-solder kind.
The click closure. The opposite end of the hoop closes by friction. A small protrusion on one half of the hoop locks into a matching notch on the other half. The notch is cut with a slight undercut so the protrusion has to flex past it, and the flex is what holds the hoop closed during wear. If the protrusion is undersized or the notch is cut without the undercut, the closure clicks satisfyingly at first and then stops holding under any real pressure within a few months.
The metal hardness at the contact points. 925 silver alone has a Mohs hardness of 2.5, which is too soft for a friction closure worked several times a day. Rhodium plating brings the surface hardness of the contact points to Mohs 6 to 6.5, more than twice as hard as the underlying silver. This is why we plate all our silver interchangeable hoops in rhodium even where the customer-visible aesthetic would work in polished silver. The plating at the closure is functional, not decorative.
The seated stone setting, in mechanical detail
This is the mechanism on the Ruby and Emerald gold-plated hoops and on both interchangeable rings. The hoop or ring itself has no hinge. The swap element sits in a recessed cup at a fixed point on the hoop, held by a mechanism that presses down on the element from above (a lever), or springs up against it from below (a sprung tongue), depending on the piece.
To swap, you release the holding mechanism with light finger pressure or, on some designs, a small tool supplied with the piece. You lift the current element away from the cup. You place the new element in the cup, ensuring it sits flat and centered. You re-engage the holder and test the seat by pressing the element from the side; it should not move.
The seated stone setting takes fifteen to thirty seconds per swap, roughly three times longer than the open-close hoop. What it gives you in exchange is a much more secure hold. The element cannot detach under lateral force from hair, clothing, or movement. A stone-set element weighing two grams is held as firmly as one weighing half a gram; the mechanism does not care about weight within its designed range. Only a deliberate release opens it.
Why we do not use three other mechanisms
The interchangeable earring market includes clip-on bails, magnetic closures, and threaded posts as alternative mechanisms, but we build none of them across the current Loretana line, for reasons worth stating rather than leaving as an unexplained absence in the range.
Clip-on bails. A small hinged bail that opens, attaches to a base, and closes. Works well mechanically. The visible join between the bail and the base is thicker than in a recessed setting, which becomes part of the design rather than disappearing into it. On a minimalist hoop this reads as clutter.
Magnetic closures. Fast to swap, no moving parts to wear. The problem is that magnetic field strength decays with each wear cycle. Within one to two years of daily wear the closure detaches under light pressure. It is the wrong mechanism for a piece we expect to hold for ten years.
Threaded posts. A fine screw thread on a post; the swap element threads onto it. Reliable and secure once fitted. The swap takes thirty to sixty seconds, which is too slow for a piece that is supposed to move with the outfit.
Five checks at the point of purchase
Whether you buy from us or elsewhere in the market, five specific checks separate a piece that will last a decade of daily wear from one that will loosen or fail within its first year, and none of them requires any tool beyond your own fingers and a moment of attention.
- Open and close the hinge ten times. The tenth close should feel identical to the first. Any softening in tension over ten cycles will multiply over thousands.
- Test the element fit. Place the swap element on the hoop and rotate it gently with a fingertip. There should be no play at all. Half a millimeter of rotation under light pressure means the element will slide loose within months of wear.
- Read the hallmark. Inside the hoop, look for a clean 925 stamp with the Lithuanian assay office symbol and the maker's mark. Blurred, shallow, or single-stamped pieces have not passed independent testing.
- Check the plating reach. Look at the inside of the open hoop. Rhodium plating should extend to the inner edge, not stop where the customer's eye would not usually go.
- Weigh in the palm. A 925 silver interchangeable hoop between 12 and 16 millimeters weighs two to five grams per side. A pair that feels suspiciously light is probably brass or steel plated in silver, not silver itself.
Daily habits that extend the mechanism's life
The closure mechanism is the only part of an interchangeable hoop that wears with time. The metal itself is stable for decades. Four small habits keep the mechanism tight.
Remove the pair at night. Sleep movement puts uneven lateral force on the hinge from the pillow, and a few minutes of removal each evening, followed by placing the pair in a soft pouch or a lined tray, is the single largest extension to the piece's life that a wearer can make.
Store closed, not open. When the piece is in its pouch, the hoop should be in its closed position. The closure is engineered to rest closed, and resting open means the click mechanism stays under tension and softens over months.
Swap elements with clean fingers. Oils and salts from the skin can build up at the contact points. A swap with washed hands once a day is enough to avoid the buildup.
Apply perfume, lotion, and hairspray before the earrings, not after. The chemicals accelerate tarnish on any uncoated silver and can build at the closure where they cause friction over time.
When to bring a piece back for service
A well-built interchangeable hoop rarely needs service in its first decade. The signs that it does are specific and worth catching early.
- The closure clicks closed but the hoop opens under light pressure. The click protrusion has worn or the notch has deformed. A re-tensioning at the studio restores it.
- The swap element rotates on the hoop after a clean seating. The receiving edge has worn or the element has bent. A polish or a small adjustment restores it.
- The hinge moves stiffly or makes a small sound when opened. Debris has built up at the pivot. A clean and light re-lubrication restores it.
We service our own pieces from Kaunas. The three faults above are corrected without part replacement in the great majority of cases. Bringing a piece in early, when the first sign appears, extends its total life by years compared with waiting until the failure is complete.

Should the hinge open with my fingers, or do I need a tool?
Light finger pressure should open it. If a tool is required, the hinge is too tight and was finished incorrectly. If the hoop opens on its own with no pressure, the hinge is already too loose. Both extremes signal a quality issue at manufacture.
Do swap elements from different Loretana pieces fit each other?
Sometimes, within the same series. The Blue Halo silver and Blue Halo gold-plated pieces share compatible base geometry. The Blue Drop, Blue Duo, and Ruby and Emerald pieces each use their own bed geometry and do not cross. Each product page notes compatibility where it applies.
Can I have an interchangeable hoop repaired if the closure loosens?
Yes. We service our own pieces from the Kaunas studio. A loose closure is almost always corrected by re-tensioning rather than by replacing a part. The earlier we see it, the simpler the service.
